ABSTRACT A brief introduction to the widely spread theory of Importance Sampling is given. Several approaches to the optimization of the twisted density function are described, such as: i) using the ideal (zero-variance) estimator as a guideline, ii) increasing the probability of the event to be analyzed, iii) splitting the random process trajectory, iv) sequentially adapting the twisted density, and v) using uniformly bounded likelihood ratios. A brief description of the regenerative approach to simulations is given as well. Some details that should be taken into consideration when applying these techniques, in order to avoid a poor performance of the estimator, are also explained.

متن کاملKnowledge and attitude towards HIV/AIDS among Iranian students
BACKGROUND Young people are of particular importance in state policies against Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS). We intended to assess the knowledge and attitude of high school students regarding AIDS in Iran. METHODS Through a cluster-sampling, 4641 students from 52 high schools in Tehran were assessed by anonymous questionnaires in February 2002. RESULTS The students identified t...
متن کامل125 Years of Radiative Transfer: Enduring Triumphs and Persisting Misconceptions
The evolution of phenomenological and microphysical approaches to radiative transfer (RT) and directional radiometry (DR) is outlined. The importance of the seminal 1887 paper by Eugen von Lommel is discussed. It is shown that owing to recent advances, the disciplines of RT and DR have finally become legitimate branches of statistical electromagnetics.

Third Graders’ Misconceptions about Evaporation and Liquefaction Phenomena A. Badriyaan, Ph.D. Concepts of evaporation and liquefaction are of significance in both daily life and the school curriculum, yet misconceptions about these two phenomena are frequent. To assess the extent of such misconceptions among third graders, a cluster sample of 132 of them from four schools i...
